Why this month
The men who carried you this year have not heard it from you.
The clocks fall back on November 1, and the dark comes early. This time of year a man pulls inward. Somewhere there is a short list of men who carried you: the one who called when you were at the bottom, the coach who would not quit on you, the friend who showed up with a truck. Most of them have never heard it from you. Not because you are ungrateful. Because nobody set aside the minute, and saying it out loud to another man feels strange.
Leave it there, and this winter goes the way the last one did: the thanks stays in your head, and the men who carried you never know.
